Endorphins are Feel good chemicals that circulate in the body when pleasurable activity occurs. These neurochemicals are well known to the general public.
Research from the 1990’s on neurochemicals released during safe human touch such as a hug or a massage. What was discovered was that while endorphins were present. they were not the dominant messenger. Endocannabinoids were the dominant chemicals responding to human touch. The effect is very similar to that of endorphins but, while endorphins act primarily in the brain, endocannabinoids act in the brain and in the body. This can explain why some patients are dizzy after OMT and some feel sedated.
