Can OMT change your mood?

There are neurochemical messengers that are released that alter brain activity and mood. Many people are familiar with these chemicals, endorphins. These help reduce pain, improve mood and lower stress. They are released with pleasurable activity. They act primarily in the brain.
In then 1990’s research demonstrated that other neurochemicals that effect the brain and the body, are released with safe touch. These chemicals are called endocannabinoids. The researchers did lab work on individuals that experienced a therapeutic touch and found that endocannabinoids were increased. The effects of lower blood pressure and feeling improved mood are primarily from release of these neurotransmitters. This can explain the dizziness some people have after osteopathic manipulative treatment especially those that have their blood pressure controlled with medicine. Individuals with low normal blood pressure may also experience this.
