Fibromyalgia is a condition without a known cause or treatment other than exercise and stretching. Many treatments have been tried with variable success. Invariably the pains persist. Reports of MRI’s of brains demonstrate specific changes based on how many years the individuals suffer. With increasing time of involvement there is a corresponding decrease in the number of neurons as well as communication and interpretation of signals returning to the brain. There continues to be no inciting event nor structural abnormality that accounts for symptoms of pain. However, the bodies response to fibromyalgia is the same as found in other causes of chronic pain. This may signify that no single treatment will be effective for all ~10 million fibromyalgia patients in the U.S . So, what ever works to control an individuals pain is what may work for fibromyalgia. There is an increased use of complimentary medical practice that patients with fibromyalgia and I hope that there is some relief found.
Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT) has been effective for some fibromyalgia patients and has the benefit of changing the brain neurochemistry to effect control of pain and feelings of wellbeing. Rebalancing the body architecture is an added benefit!
