Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine(OMT) has been in continuous practice for over 150 years and many individuals have benefitted from the care given. Over the years the practice has developed over 40 individual techniques, the founding principle remains true. The science behind the treatment continues to evolve. There are research papers that elucidate what physiologic changes occur after treatment. The majority of patients treated require 8-10 treatments or less to achieve lasting results. Some are symptom free for months or longer. Some ask to have regular ongoing treatment. The numbers of people that don’t respond are few. There are no always effective treatments in the field of medicine. Hands on treatment has persisted in many forms, massage (and its various techniques), Chiropractic care, Acupuncture, Physical therapy. The common goal of all these treatments is to have the person seeking relief, experience relief. The studies of OMT are many case studies with a few RCT(randomized clinical trails) studies.
What separates OMT from the other hands on treatment? The difference of OMT from other treatments is that doctors that treat with OMT have a knowledge of general medicine and condition mimics that present as a musculoskeletal complaints but are actually referred pain from other medical issues. Osteopathic Doctors all learn OMT. Not all offer OMT to their respective patients for many different reasons. Most frequently reported reasons are lack of confidence in performing the treatment and lack of time to treat. Like all medical specialties OMT improves with practice and skills become rusty with non use. I have 36 years experience with OMT and my results speak for themselves.
