There has been a dominant medical system in the US for over a century. This system has progressed and continues to improve for the betterment of the population. There has always been a number of supplemental systems available to provide care that was lacking or less effective in the dominant system. Some examples are Homeopathy, Acupuncture, Osteopathy, Massage, Chiropractic, Psychology, and others that provide expertise and high patient satisfaction ratings
by providing care in addition to the dominant system. Some of these systems have been supported and valued for centuries and their practice while ever present waxes and wanes.
Surveys are a fact of life for all. The most prestigious medical facilities perform many areas for medicine very well, but are lacking in some areas. There is no model system that can treat all conditions well. All peoples do not have the same access to multiple systems of care. Large metropolitan areas have more people and potentially more systems available to care for patients.
I believe the care provided outside the western model is providing needed care not readily available in one system to keep oneself as functional and comfortable as possible.
The medical co-systems in the US are MD and DO care. Osteopathy straddles the line between dominant and supplemental care. Osteopathic medicine has been surging with enrollment of more students. The philosophy behind osteopathy is that the body is a cohesive system and should be approached as such. This is were Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment excels allowing the DO’s to straddle the line. The US economy sees this as well as Americans use supplemental medical care in growing numbers approaching 18.3% of gross domestic product in 2021.
